El Toro Decorative Screens, Light and Water Feature
Paul Kelly Design and MMX Projects undertook a major refurbishment of El Toro at Warwick Farm, commissioning Di Emme to create decorative screens, a custom light, and a water feature for the project.
The decorative screens partition the entry to the gaming area. The screens are comprised of Rimex-clad steel frames with double-layer acrylic inserts. The acrylic is hand-painted on the reverse to create a beautiful diffused onyx finish. Di Emme provided the construction drawings and worked closely with the ceiling fabricators to ensure the screens had adequate supports.
For the custom light in the gaming area, Di Emme used MDF board gilded in gold leaf to create hanging blades installed in a steel frame. Di Emme worked on the elements in their Leichhardt studio and installed the pieces on site, quadrant-by-quadrant. An electrician added the LED strip lighting that illuminates inwards onto the blades.
Di Emme provided the drawings and documentation for the water feature. The fountain has three stainless steel vessels that continually fill up and overflow. The builder, concreter, and plumber created the pond, and provided the water feed and pipe-to-sewer based on the Di Emme design. Di Emme provided the custom stainless steel, proprietary pots and commissioning.
