project: cartier australia
DESCRIPTION
French luxury brand Cartier tailors its international boutiques to their location while retaining a defined level of quality and opulence. Di Emme produced bespoke applied finishes, artworks, wall panelling and column cladding for the flagship Oceania store in George Street Sydney and its Brisbane boutique.
The range of decorative finishes includes a scalloped impasto plaster with a metallic finish, opulent gold leaf finishes, and a bespoke platinum. Cartier provided some inspiration and guidance, but Di Emme artists were largely given creative licence within the brief.
Di Emme artists hand painted eucalypt and acacia leaves in the private viewing rooms in the Sydney boutique, and stencilled bougainvillea in Brisbane’s VIP room. Di Emme produced the distinctive column cladding in the George St store by machine routing a gypsum-based material that they curved and fixed to the columns’ structural frames before adding a final finish on site. The process involved computer drafting, prototyping, sampling, and precision production.
The stairwell artwork in the Brisbane boutique is a series of textured plaster panels in a gradation of hues inspired by an aerial photo of The Whitsundays. Di Emme produced 1:1 samples and designs to demonstrate colours and finishes resonant of the Barrier Reef.
Di Emme’s work with Cartier is ongoing as they create a library of decorative finishes for Cartier Asia.
