Floating Wire Mesh Sculpture at West Hotel
West Hotel is a sophisticated new build from Fitzpatrick + Partners on the western side of the Sydney CBD close to Barangaroo. The distinctive exterior has a faceted façade, while the similarly striking interior from Woods Bagot takes its cues from the Australian landscape.
Di Emme worked with Woods Bagot and lighting consultants, Point of View, on the distinctive elements in the hotel reception: the white waratah mural and wire mesh sculpture.
Di Emme artists hand-painted the mural on site. Handmade tiles form the “canvas” and clever lighting shows up the brush strokes and adds depth to the painting.
The wire mesh sculpture floats in the double-height lobby reflecting golden light into the space and onto the custom concrete reception desk. Di Emme pushed, pulled and twisted the wire mesh into shape, and sprayed the finished form a custom colour. The designers and builders met periodically at the Di Emme studio to confirm the sculptural development.
The floating wire mesh sculpture and hand-painted white waratahs are conspicuous within the deep-toned interior that offers a sanctuary from the hubbub of the city.
