Ramadan Nights: Lanterns Shed Light on the Local Culture of Lakemba
Ramadan Nights Lakemba is a month-long cultural event held nightly between dusk and 3am. Ramadan Nights is popular among those breaking fast and Sydneysiders with an interest in global food and culture. More than a million people attend each year to sample the food and soak up the atmosphere.
The event host, Canterbury Bankstown Council, wanted an assortment of Arabian-inspired lanterns to light the intersection of Haldon Street and Railway Parade Lakemba. The lanterns illuminated the epicentre of the night market and remain in place as an enduring acknowledgment of the local culture.
Di Emme crafted seven lamps and 12 moon-shaped lanterns from powder-coated stainless steel and UV-rated acrylic. Waterproof tuneable white LED strips provide the illumination. KJ Civil Paving managed the project.
The lanterns are a now a permanent feature of the Lakemba intersection, enhancing the streetscape by both night and day.
