How To Use Custom Led’s And Fibre Optics As An Interior Design Element
The world of lighting and unique illumination in interior design has changed drastically over the past few years. Bespoke lighting has completely redefined the way we embellish a space. Over the last few years, designers have started combining all the lighting options available in the market to deliver something distinguished and unique. LEDs and Fibre Optics are one such subset.
While LEDs have been in use for quite a while, they become better and better each year – and not just because of their amazing CRI, energy efficiency, and bright illumination. LEDs are also great for home automation systems. They also come in a number of great designs, which can be paired well with different interior design themes.
Fibre Optic lighting, on the other hand, is a relatively new venture. It’s mostly used in accent capacity. It works like this: fibre optics usually transmit light from one source to the next remotely. Each fibre glows along the way – just like electric current does in a wire; only this light can be seen. This ensures some amazing custom lighting designs.
Both of these fixtures provide excellent opportunity to design bespoke lighting for spaces. They’ve become increasingly popular in interior designing. If you’re wondering how they can be combined, let’s take a look at some gorgeous techniques right below:
1. Going small but impactful with fibre optics
Custom lighting design solutions always require some thinking out of the box. It’s always about how the perception of light and material can be tweaked, enhanced, and changed to wow the public. Di Emme provided an excellent articulation of one such design for the Mingara Recreational Club.
Conceived by Luchetti Krelle, the concept consisted of a mirrored acrylic ceiling in an elliptical shape. Fibre Optics and 450 anodized aluminium tubes of different lengths were used to design a statement-worthy fixture that not only catches the eye immediately but also makes you wonder how it’s created. This particular bespoke lighting arrangement evokes a glamorous appeal and is highly innovative as well. Each aluminium tube is lit with fibre optics at one end, which create an illusion that they’re lit on both sides thanks to the reflective ceiling. This also doubles the amount of illumination!
2. Getting creative with all-sized LEDs
The best part about using LEDs in a bespoke lighting fixture is that you can easily translate all of your ideas into reality. They come in a lot of shapes, sizes, and forms, which makes it easier for the designer to install them into customized fixtures. One such example is the Paspaley Festive Lights in Martin Place!
Designed by Haron Robson and realized by Di Emme, this project consists of custom LED light buds installed in star-shaped acrylic spheres. It’s as magical looking as it sounds. The pearly luster of this fixture immediately evokes a wonderful Holiday vibe, which is basically what these lights are used for. Each bud is stored away, refinished, and installed every holiday season, which makes it a flexible custom lighting design option!
3. LEDs going beyond customization
LED lights are available in so many different sizes and formats that you can easily use them to create the light fixture of your dreams. They go beyond the restriction of materials, themes, and scope of design. If you’re wondering how then take a look at the Twig Light project done by Di Emme.
Featuring bespoke lighting in all its glory, this fixture is a part of an eco-retreat project in Taronga Zoo called the Taronga Wildlife Retreat. The purpose of the project was to maintain sustainability in every aspect, which also extends to the light fixture. Thus came the Twig Light, designed from hundreds of native branches artfully hand-assembled in a haphazard nest-like structure and integrated with LEDs that add a warm glow to the whole ambience. This shows how custom lighting design can be personalized beyond expectations with the help of LEDs.
4. Unearthly recreations with Fibre Optics
Since fibre optics are so small, they’ve opened up a whole new world of experimentation with lighting. Now, an actual “starry sky” ceiling is not an unrealistic pipe dream, and nothing can prove that better than the Museum of Sydney’s special starlit firmament created by Di Emme. The starry sky is a complex bespoke lighting system of fibre optics that have been intermittently but strategically scattered on a dark backdrop and shine like actual constellations.
Designers prefer LED lights for practical reasons, which include the fact that they’re long-lasting, cost-effective, and easily available in all forms.
Fibre Optic lighting is used because of its decorative and accentuation capacity. We hope this list highlights some of the creative ideas bespoke lighting can be used in a variety of projects.
