32 Smith St Lobby Bas-relief Mural
Di Emme worked with Darug artist Leanne Tobin to create the massive mural in the lobby of the commercial tower by PK architects.
Detail of Darug Woman
Finessing the artwork required a lot of interpretive work.
The subtractive wall art takes shape
We used hard base render tinted black, topped with a softer grey-tinted render. Our artist used a variety of tools to carve into the render.
The Darug people fished in the Parramatta River
Colour washes were applied to create more tonal variants.
Life on the Parramatta River
We used a projector to chalk in the artwork on the site walls.
An artist collaboration
Darug artist, Leanne Tobin came on site to ensure her artwork was produced to her intention.

The 8m by 5m carved mural occupies one wall in the ground floor lobby.
The Darug people fished, cooked and canoed on the river
For thousands of years the Burramattagal, a Darug clan, lived along the upper reaches of the Parramatta River.
Using power tools to carve the render
It took two weeks of jack hammering to bring the artwork to life.
Floor lights highlight the detail
The lobby lighting focuses attention on the mural and highlights the details.
